The cutoff age for the hospitals' AYA (Adolescent and Young Adult) Group is 39! Woo! I just made the cut. Score! This is flattering. I am going to consider myself a "young adult" now. This program gives you access to all kinds of resources (psychiatry, peer support, access to nurses, endocrinology). I'm so thankful that I made it into this group. When I look around the hospital, I seldom see anyone my age. I had my first virtual meetup with the "young" group, as I like to call it, a few weeks ago. Being the oldest of this group, I just wanted to be there for the young ones (like a big sister, or um, mother to some of the younger ones). This group of "kids" was absolutely incredible. They were passionate about their treatment plan, smart, and social. Many of them had it much worse than I did, and they were SO knowledgeable, and so strong (I felt like a pussy in this group, listening to their stories). I can't wait to keep meeting up with them, and checking in to see how they are doing. I also joined another group, which I call the "oldies", even though most, aren't old at all. This one is via chat, and it's a support group for all types of cancer, and it's for people that are currently in treatment. This group...man...they are special. There are 8 of us that meet virtually via chat/text, every week. The advice and support that they give me every week, is invaluable. We all talk about how, when this is all over, we are all going to meet up somewhere and have a party. I think I've made some lifelong friends here (and it's only been 3 weeks so far).
